Habitat for Humanity houses around
the world are built according to the
same guiding principals.

Habitat houses in North America and Canada are typically built using wood frame construction, Gypsum board interior walls, vinyl siding and asphalt shingle roofs.Modest by U.S. standards, a 3 bedroom Habitat home will include 1,050 square feet of living space. The size of each home is specific to the needs of the family. In Burke County, Habitat has built one home with 5 bedrooms.

Habitat families must provide a $500 downpayment , 250 to 500 hours of "sweat equity" and agree to keep the house as a single family dwelling, maintained and in good order. Repairs must be made to keep the house within acceptable condition, appropriate as to the condition when they purchased it with reasonable wear and tear.

Homeowners are not to house livestock, keep untagged or inoperable vehicles or to allow any unlawful activities on their property. They must adhere to all neighborhood, community and governmental ordinances and regulations for their property.

Modestly-sized, Habitat homes are large enough for the homeowner family's needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.

DECENT
Habitat uses quality, locally-available, and donated (new, unused) building materials.

AFFORDABLE
The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes and no-profit loans make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat houses.
